Michael Kalish quickly became a noted figure on the art scene with his highly intriguing sculptures soon after his first collection debut. His body of work has since grown into an illustrious array of pieces that embrace everything from Americana and iconic portraits to still life and historical imagery.
His primary and signature medium, the license plate, or as Kalish refers to them as “the thumbprints of automobiles,” allows each piece to embrace Kalish's ideals with his own sophistication, imagery and distinctive style. The subject matter of the work, in combination with the way his artwork is created, leaps off the wall at the viewer even before the medium is discovered.
After years of creating pieces exclusively from license plates, Kalish has progressed and began to incorporate salvageable vintage truck tailgates into his artwork. The use of such materials has further advanced his body of work to feature and debut yet another series devoted to sculptures of intricate Roses and Icons.
It is the combination of Kalish's material resourcefulness and creativity that has thrust the artist into the national spotlight. His work has been in exhibitions varying from International museums and galleries to include The United States Embassy in Moscow, The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, Guggenheim Las Vegas (YCC), the windows of Barneys New York, Arvesta Museum and Riverside Art Museum (RAM) in the historic Mission Inn District of Riverside, California.
