Reflectionism
Reflectionism transforms classical oil painting into a three-dimensional experience. Paint is built with palette knives to a depth of one to two inches, so the surface changes continuously as the viewer moves. Because a Reflectionist work cannot be fully understood through a phone, a computer, or a reproduced image, it must be experienced in person.
The Reflectionist Principle holds that the state a painter is in while working is preserved in the finished work, and that a viewer can feel it. Reflectionists work in a deliberately constructive state and treat that state as part of the material of the painting.
JD Miller founded Reflectionism in Dallas in 2001 and has since trained the eight other founding artists of the movement: Philip Romano, Lea Fisher, Carrie Cameron, Tanner Lawley, Sue Yu Petty, Renea Menzies, Kelly Hrad and Sharon Virts.
The Inaugural Reflectionist Exhibition opens 12 September 2026 at Samuel Lynne Galleries.
